About the idiom: Rape is a universal issue. However, the behaviors and ugly customs described in the movie “Promising Young Woman” are infamously north americans.
Therefore, I felt I had to choose the english idiom for the present article.
“Promising Young Woman”, more than promising
“Promising Young Woman”, is an independent movie released in 2020:

It was released in a complicated time (COVID19) and wouldn’t have met such a success if it wasn’t so relevant. It was rightfully rewarded multiple times.
Note: Some say it is a dark comedy. Listen, for example to what Trevor Noah said about it in 2021:

It didn’t seem comedic to me at all, only dark, very dark (and I like dark humor)! Sarcastic (very darkly) could be a better description of it.
I found the acting of the main actress, Carey Mulligan, as a cold blooded and focused avenger, amazingly scary.

It made the film especially difficult and yet fascinating to watch.
Carey Mulligan, scarily committed
Irreal until confirmed
When I saw it, however, the deadly commitment of the main character seemed to me irreal. This, somehow, allowed me to bare it more easily …
… That is until someone unwillingly confirmed how casual awful behaviors like those shown were in real life.
A critic’s review in “Variety” did just that:
‘Promising Young Woman’: Film Review
A wince-worthy statement
Within this generally positive analysis, the following statement could be found:
Mulligan, a fine actress, seems a bit of an odd choice as this admittedly many-layered apparent femme fatale – Margot Robbie is a producer here, and one can (perhaps too easily) imagine the role might once have been intended for her. Whereas with this star, Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on. The flat American accent she delivers in her lowest voice register likewise seems a bit meta, though it’s not quite clear what the quote marks around this performance signify.
Note: I underlined the weird parts in the text (not including “fine actress”, which is also wince-worthy).
Carey Mulligan winced, so did I
Carey Mulligan understandably winced at this part:
Carey Mulligan Responds to Variety’s Apology for ‘Promising Young Woman’ Review
She said:
“I was like, ‘Really? For this film, you’re going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020?’ I just couldn’t believe it.’”
I interpreted the critic’s statement the same way she (and many others) did. AKA it was an implicit confirmation of the core argument of the movie: a cultural trivialization of rape.
Mulligan’s reaction has become as famous as the movie.
“Promising Young Woman” earns, with applauses, a recommendation from TMN, and Carey Mulligan a place among our preferred actors.
Careful, though: its story is really disturbing.
