An article about a TV series evolved into something more, when a close one asked my opinion about the American presidential elections. This is my way to remove an elephant in the room from TMN’s readers’ sight.

“The Diplomat” is only the start point

Binge-watching The season 2 of “The Diplomat”

The season 2 of “The Diplomat” series is now available on Netflix, and I already binge-watched it.

It wasn’t a big effort: this second season only has six episodes … Which may be because of the SAG-AFTRA Strike.

The tone wasn’t very different from the first season, and I would normally have enjoyed it.

I didn’t. The circumstances, I mean the real-life-ones, have changed: no one believe this narrative about an ethical American diplomat anymore.

It is a question of timing: many (including me) have been closely following the US presidency election.

On the publication day of this editorial, it is supposed to finish tomorrow, with the revelation of the winner.

A few casualties, American-style

But quite a few casualties happened along the path, the main being the credibility of the American system.

Too many lies, too much hate (racism, xenophobia, sexism) too much corruption (on too many levels). We also learned (more like a confirmation, actually) that the power is in the hand of wealthy people and corporations. There are so many of them!

And that the American are easily manipulated by foreign forces. These forces don’t even bother hiding it, and why would they? The idea of a dictature (is it “on day one” or “from day one”?) is already accepted.

Only two side to this story?

“On the other side” (because there are supposedly only two side to this story), the situation is not that better, when being …

  • A Muslim will continue to be an act of courage,
  • Poor will still be synonym of loneliness and abandon,
  • White will remain a free card to appear on Hallmark movies,
  • Democrat politician will still be synonym of corporate asset.

The great John Oliver just gave his reluctant endorsement in a sad (still humoristic) way:

Choosing the least of two evils in not exhilarating. So much so that Europe Union doesn’t relies on United States anymore (it has already been so for a quite a while, now).

Not the best moment for diplomacy

So, no, “The Diplomat” season 2 wasn’t released at the best moment. Adding to it, describing an imaginary version of United Kingdom it isn’t helping either.

Everyone knows how deep down they are with the Brexit, and how alone, too. Symbolically, the series looks like a denial of both situations.

Electing Kamala Harris won’t even guarantee a future for US international diplomacy …

… And it still can very much be the other option. Ironically, this alternative would send in exile the best American people, a good thing for the places they’d choose.

“The Diplomat” is not believable at all
